Japan 2012 Trip

I paid another visit to Japan, primarily for YAPC::Asia, but of course you can't fly all that way and then not do some exploring... :-)

Argentina

This was not only my first visit to Argentina, but also my first time in South America and even my first time in the southern hemisphere! And what a country to start out with in this part of the world. A very pleasant capital, beautiful mountains and lakes, incredible glaciers - and then there's all the stuff I couldn't capture in photos, such as the lovely people and great food. Yup, it was a good trip - and the weather was nice for a lot of it too.

Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Helsinki

I went to YAPC::Russia in Moscow; there wasn't a lot of time for sightseeing amongst the conference activities, but I did snap a few shots on an evening stroll. Afterwards, I traveled with my friend Carl to Saint Petersburg and Helsinki.

Latvia

Here's some photos from Riga in Latvia, where I was for a couple of days for a conference.

South Korea

I spent around ten days visiting South Korea during September 2009. I can only say I wish I'd had much longer - the hospitality and the food were both totally amazing. I wasn't blessed with the best of weather for all of my time there, so the photos don't really do it justice, but here they are anyway.

Japan

I spent about 3 weeks in Japan in September 2009. I mostly visited some of the best-known Japanese cities, but I also managed to get out into the countryside for some stunning views of Mount Fuji.

Belgium And Ukraine 2009

I had two conferences a week apart, needed a vacation and have something of a thing for overnight train journeys and random wanderings around the former Soviet Union. Result: my winter/spring wanderings, initially in Belgium for a conference, with a day in Holland, but mostly in Ukraine.

Bulgaria

I had a conference in Sophia, Bulgaria. Delightfully, I was also taken out to see the Rila monastery by a conference organizer the day afterwards. Here are some snaps from the trip.

Czech Republic

While living in Bratislava, I'm less than an hour from the Czech border. Thus, I can make trips over there to visit some places now and then. This album has photos from such escapades.

San Francisco and Around

I had a meeting in Mountain View, and took the night and morning before joining it in San Francisco. Then on the day after the meeting, I joined one of the other attendees and couple of other people from the hostel on a little road-trip heading north from the city.

Crossing Russia: The Trans-Siberian Journey

In the autumn of 2008, I traveled along the Trans-Siberian railway. Rather than doing it all in one go, I broke it into a series of smaller journeys and visited cities spread across Russia, deviating a little from the Trans-Siberian route proper in a couple of places. These photos document the trip, though there should be an e-book too with much more written detail.

Romania, Budapest and the Tatras

Photos from a journey starting in the south of Transylvania, heading north through a few Romanian cities and then into Hungary, and finishing with a few days of relaxing and walking in the High Tatra mountains in Slovakia.

China

In October 2007, I spent four weeks in China. Starting in Hong Kong, I headed west accross the south of China. The westmost point was the city of Shigatse in Tibet. From Tibet, I headed east again, finishing up in Shanghai. Here are the photos I took as I did over 2,500 miles of overland travel, reaching up to 5,600m of altitude.

East Europe

In August 2007 I grabbed my backpack and spent just over a week hanging around in Eastern Europe. Starting in Budapest, capital of Hungary, I headed north up the Danube to Bratislava, the Slovakian capital, East to the High Tatras, around them into Poland and finished up in Krakow. I grabbed about 30 minutes in Warsaw on my way to the airport to fly on to a business meeting immediately following the trip. Joining me for most of the trip was Gary, a friend from my uni days. It was his first backpacking trip.

Oregon

I headed over to Portland, Oregon for OSCON. A few photo-worthy things happened: we flew over Greenland on the way there with a cloudless sky so there was an amazing view, and on the final day Rebekah, a friend I made at OSCON, took me and a couple of other guys at the conference hiking and to see the Pacific ocean, which I'd never seen before.

Spain February 2007

The cold, harsh winter of England gave way to a nice trip to warm and sunny Spain in February. Much of the trip involved work, since that's why I was there; as per usual, I went some places on the weekends.

Nice And Les Gorges du Verdon

After a conference in Nice in January of 2007, I had some time to look around Nice itself. Even better, three of us from the conference got together, hired a car and the one of us who could drive took us up to Les Gorges du Verdon, the second biggest canyon in the world.

Paris

In November 2006 I headed along to the French Perl Workshop to give a talk. As part of the arrangements for this, I was to have a day being a tourist in Paris.

Chicago

In November 2006 a Hackathon was organized just outside of the Chicago suburbs. The chance to hack and see a city that I'd heard good things of, when put with cheap flight prices and a subsidised hotel rate, proved too much to resists, so off I went. Conclusion: Chicago rocks, but in November it's cold and cloudy. Anyway, here's the pictures.

Railways

I've always been something of a train lover - from watching Thomas The Tank Engine when I was a little kid to building a model railway for many years, until we ran out of space at home. I'm currently planning a Swiss layout for when I get a place of my own, which will hopefully be in 2007. In the meantime, here's some railway photos from around the world.

YAPC::EU::2005 In Braga, Portugal

In 2005 I attended the European Perl Conference for the first time. It took place over three days in Braga, Portugal - a warm, sunny and cheap location. I gave two talks and had a lot of fun with the other various Perl folks I met. Here are some pictures - I didn't take many at the conference itself, but there are loads on the web.

My 2005 Trip To Switzerland

In July 2005 I took a 10 night holiday in the beautiful Jungfrau region of Switzerland, staying at the Sunstar Hotel in Wengen with Dan from work, Gary from uni and my mum (though she only came for the last 7 days). By day we explored the area and did some great walks and by night we enjoyed wonderful food and a couple of pints of the local brew. Thankfully, the photos are only of the day. :-)

Anyway, as is normal for my trips to places these days, I had my camera and here are some photos.

My 2004 Trip To Arizona

I spent the 15th - 29th July 2004 in the USA, and most of it in Arizona (aside from a day in Nevada, when I went to Las Vegas). This page contains photos of the things I saw there as well as notes to explain what they are (and so that when I look back at this in a lot of years time, provided I'm still about to look back, I can remember what I did when I was young(er)).
